Exercise 05b:  THE HOUSE I/we/they LIVE IN

Issued: 28.07.2023    Due: 04.08.2023

*Individual exercise

Everyone needs a house to live in.  Shelter is a basic need. We all live in a HOUSE, be it in the city or countryside. We have all grown up in houses and have grown up studying about housing- from social science in Primary to Human settlements in the university. Everyone wants to live a happy and healthy life, and in our home ‘the house I live in’ there are specific attributes we enjoy most and those that we do not enjoy at all.

The purpose of this exercise is to compares the quality of life in your residence (house/plot) with that of the plot you studies in Gatsata, towards a deeper understanding of context-specific and culturally sensitive housing needs.

The exercise is structured around 2 key questions;

1.     What do I like most about the house I (plot we) live in?

2.     What don’t I like about the house I (plot we) live in?

3.     How does this compare to the plot I studied in Gatsata neighbourhood in June 2023?

*Some reflections on: Location, Materials, Size, Shape, Functionality, space interconnection, Colour, rooms, gardens, sanitation, cooking, security, privacy, landscape, neighbourhood, shared amenities, other dwellers, etc.

_______ . _______

Presentation: Students are expected to write short essays on the three key areas and prepare discussion points for class discussion.
