This module, Stylistics and Creative Writing, introduces you to the systematic study of language and style in English literary and non-literary texts. It examines how writers employ linguistic choices to construct meaning, communicate ideas, develop characters, establish tone, and shape readers’ responses. The module explores key stylistic concepts, including foregrounding, deviation, parallelism, cohesion, register, point of view, and narrative style. Through close analysis of poetry, prose, drama, and other forms of discourse, students learn to connect linguistic patterns with literary interpretation. They also develop practical skills in applying stylistic theories, analysing texts critically, and producing well-supported, evidence-based interpretations. The module further encourages students to experiment with language creatively and understand how stylistic choices can enhance both literary expression and creative writing.
