Welcome message
Dear students, welcome to the VM80782 - Companion Animal Medicine module at the College of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Sciences, University of Rwanda.
This module is 10 credits size and consists of two main units: Unit One – Canine and Feline Medicine (7 credits), and Unit Two – Equine Medicine (3 credits) and will be taught to you in Semester I.
The overall aim of this module is to equip you with the knowledge, clinical reasoning and practical skills required to examine, diagnose, treat, manage and prevent common medical conditions affecting companion animals, while promoting animal welfare and effective communication with animal owners.
Throughout the module, emphasis will be placed not only on what you know, but also on what you can do in a clinical setting.
By the end of this module, you will be able to: perform a systematic clinical examination using safe and welfare-friendly handling; recognize normal and abnormal clinical findings; interpret clinical signs and basic diagnostic findings; formulate appropriate differential diagnoses; develop rational diagnostic, treatment and preventive-care plans; and communicate your findings and recommendations effectively to animal owners.
The module will combine lectures, guided self-learning, clinical demonstrations, practical sessions, case discussions and clinical problem-solving activities. Active participation is therefore essential.
