Welcome to the course of Waste management:
The course describes the principles of waste collection, segregation, storage, transport, treatment and disposal and provides skills on how to manage wastes in the community so as to prevent their associated diseases. It also covers national and international policies and legislation relating to waste management. Thus, the aim of this module is to enable the graduate carry out inspections and provide appropriate advice on the management of solid, hazardous, liquid wastes and excreta both in rural and urban areas and enforce laws, rules and regulations pertaining to wastes management.
Learning Outcomes
Having successfully completed this module, students should be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:
- Solid, hazardous, liquid wastes and excreta management and related terminologies
- The importance of wastes management in environmental health management
- Waste management as a problem in developing countries.
- The categories, composition, sources and quantity of wastes
- Different methods of waste collection, storage, removal, treatment and final disposal
- The techniques of wastes exploitation and uses of related products
- Appropriate methods of disposal of different kind of waste
- Laws, rules and regulations governing wastes management
