EPM1261 Introduction to Environmental Planning and Management

1. Brief Description of the Module

The main objective of the module is to provide students with the basic knowledge and skills needed to assess environmental issues and utilize environmental planning and management principles to suggest solutions that promote sustainable development. In details, the module will focus on the following topics: definitions of key concepts, major environmental issues worldwide; major drivers of global environmental change; basic environmental planning definitions, approaches and processes; evolution of paradigms and emerging approaches for environmental management, basic principles and tools for environmental management & geospatial technology for EPM.

2. Learning Outcomes

At the end of this module, students should be able to:

- Define key concepts related to environmental planning and management;

- Explain major environmental issues worldwide;

- Explain major drivers of global environmental change;

- Explain basic environmental planning definitions, approaches and processes ;

- Discuss evolution of paradigms for environmental management;

- Emerging approaches for environment management;

- Basic principles and tools for environmental management;

- Geospatial technology for EPM.

3. Teaching and Learning Methods
The main teaching and learning methods are based on lecturer-led introductory lectures, followed by active participation by students. Assessments will be done through individual and group assignments & oral presentations in plenary sessions.

4. Assessment Methods and Weighting
- Individual Assignment (10%)
- Group Assignment (20%)
- Mi-term Exam (20%)
- Final Individual Exam (50%)
