CGE3163 Geological Mapping and Interpretation
Semester I

Geological mapping is a multidisciplinary method that combines petrology, structural geology, geomorphology, paleontology, stratigraphy, sedimentology, etc. This course consists of three stages of geological mapping namely, pre-mapping, mapping and post mapping whereby the following contents are to be covered in these stages:

A.    Introduction to Geological Mapping:

Kind of Geological surveys, field equipment, Geological mapping techniques and field mapping, Types of geological maps

B.    Geological maps and mapping:

Types of geologic maps, Topographic base map, Use of Air photograph as mapping tool, geographic coordinates and metric grids,

 C.    Methods of geological mapping:

Nature and identification of rock boundaries and contacts, Mapping by following contacts, Contour maps and contouring techniques, construction of subsurface geological cross-sections and petroleum related interpretation,

D.    Underground Mapping:

Construction of subsurface Geological cross-sections and petroleum related interpretation, Thickness maps, structural contour maps and petroleum related structures and interpretation, Facies maps as a tool to describe the changes of subsurface facies

E.    Geological structures and maps:

Geological map symbols, fields measurements and techniques, uniformly dipping beds, folding, faulting etc.

F.     Technological Aids to geological mapping:

Digital terrain model, Photogeology, Remote sensing for geological mapping, Suitability of images for geological mapping.
