This module builds on fundamental concepts of organic chemistry by exploring stereochemistry, including molecular chirality, stereoisomerism, conformational analysis, and stereochemical aspects of organic reactions. It also introduces principles and strategies of organic synthesis, including reaction mechanisms, functional group transformations, and the design of synthetic pathways for the preparation of organic compounds.
The module aims at explaining the behaviour of Transition metals in comparison with non transition metals. Characteristics or Properties of Transition Metals: variable oxidation states, colour of Transition metal compounds, paramagnetism and diamagnetism of transition metals compounds.
Coordination compounds: definition, nomenclature and isomerism. Theories of formation of coordination compounds (complexes) and origin of their properties: Crystal Field Theory (CFT), Valence Bond Theory (VBT). Some applications of coordination compounds
The module deals generalities on polymers, classification, types, and mechanisms of polymerization as well as copolymer and polymerization reactions. The module will also focus on mechanical properties of polymers and finally will look at generalities on biodegradable polymers.
