1. FOREWORD

The Rwanda Basic Education Board (REB) is pleased to provide the English Teacher Training and Self-study manuals for teachers. The manuals were developed based on developed English syllabuses for Rwandan teachers at Beginner and Intermediate levels of English Proficiency. The manuals serve as official documents with the aim of ensuring consistency and coherence in the delivery of quality English Language Education in Rwandan schools.

An important contribution to achieving quality education is the improvement of teachers’ proficiency in English as they are the key deliverers of English as the medium of instruction. To ensure quality English Language skills of teachers in Rwanda, it is imperative that they are provided with selfstudy manuals from which they can learn. REB/Teacher Development and Management and Career Guidance and Counseling Department (TDM & CGC) has developed six English Teacher Training and self-study manuals for Rwandan teachers in collaboration with the University of Rwanda, English teachers and various development partners. Furthermore, these training manuals were harmonized with other manuals developed by various development partners involved in Continuous Professional Development for teachers in English. English has been the medium of instruction from primary school throughout university in the education system in Rwanda since 2009-2010 academic year.

Yet, as has been observed throughout the years, teachers’ proficiency in English language still needs improvement. English Teacher Training and Self-Study Manual is one of the efforts to remedy the situation at Primary and Secondary School levels. To serve the different levels of needs and to include the most likely needed content, two manuals were developed and organised into six sub-levels corresponding to the levels of language competence described in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) at Beginner and Intermediate levels.

The content in all these levels draws on the Competence Based Curriculum (CBC) describing the philosophy and content for teaching and learning in Rwanda.
