9. Concept of Metacognition
9.1. Meaning of Metacognition

Metacognition refers to the awareness and understanding of one’s own thinking processes. It involves the ability to monitor, control, and regulate one’s cognitive activities in learning situations. Metacognition is “thinking about thinking”: the ability to think about and regulate one’s own thinking processes. It encompasses a variety of skills and strategies that help individuals reflect on their learning, plan how to approach a task, monitor their progress, and evaluate the effectiveness of their strategies. It involves being aware of how you learn, solve problems and make decisions, as well as how to recognize when a strategy is working or when adjustments are needed.
Example: A student knows that they are good at memorizing definitions but struggle with understanding complex concepts, so they use diagrams to help with conceptual understanding.
