Welcome to this module SN80141: Module Title: Background and Development in Special Needs Education
2. Module aim
Upon the completion of the module, students should understand disability and differences as part of social diversity, special needs / inclusive education development in Rwanda and other social context, as growing opportunities for people with disabilities and other SEN and the improving opportunities through enabling accessibility standards.
3. Learning outcomes
Having successfully completed this module, students should be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:
- The similarities and differences within Special Education, Integrated Education and Inclusive Education;
- The situation in Special Needs Education within the different socio-political contexts;
- The roles played by the civil Movement such as DPO’s in the historical development of SNE and IE in Rwanda;
- The different theories as basis of practice of special needs and inclusive education in different socio-political contexts,
- The disability movements, that have contributed to the development of special needs and inclusive education in Rwanda and internationally;
- The growing opportunities for people with disabilities and other SEN through the development of enabling accessibility standards and barrier –free environment in relation with the existing challenges;
