AM80467 Probability and Statistics
Semester 3

This module introduces the principles of probability and statistics and their application to problems in mining and geological science. Students begin with descriptive statistics and the foundations of probability theory, then move through discrete and continuous random variables and their distributions before applying these tools to real geological data through estimation, hypothesis testing, multiple linear regression, and experimental design.

Throughout the module, statistical concepts are grounded in geoscientific contexts so that students build both the theoretical understanding and the practical fluency needed to analyze earth science data.

By the end of this module, students will be able to:

  • Apply descriptive and inferential statistical methods to analyze and interpret geological data
  • Work with probability distributions relevant to earth science problems, including binomial, Poisson, exponential, and normal distributions
  • Perform estimation, hypothesis testing, and confidence interval analysis on geological datasets
  • Carry out multiple linear regression and analysis of variance for environmental and geological designs
  • Use statistical software to process data and communicate results to both expert and non-expert audiences

Learning approach: Lectures combine theory with worked examples, computer lab sessions, and self-directed study. Assessment includes assignments, quizzes, a midterm examination, and a final examination.
