Module description and aim:
This module introduces the principles of animal behaviour, welfare, ethics, handling, and restraint.
It examines normal and abnormal behaviour, communication, learning, and social interactions in animals.
It explores the relationship between animal behaviour, management practices, and welfare.
Students learn methods for assessing welfare in farm, companion, and laboratory animals.
The module addresses common welfare concerns during housing, management, transport, and slaughter.
It also introduces animal rights, ethical considerations, and relevant animal welfare legislation.
Practical sessions develop skills in humane animal handling, restraint, and containment.
Attention is given to preventing fear, stress, suffering, and injury during animal interactions.
The module aims to promote the safety of both animals and personnel.
Overall, it prepares students to apply behaviour-based and humane approaches in animal care and veterinary practice.
Dear students,
Welcome to the module of Developmental and Gross Anatomy I. It is a 20 credits module covered in Veterinary Medicine year 1, semester 1. This module provides basic knowledge on embryonic development, the basic systems such as bones, muscles and internal organs and systems.
This module is very important for the Veterinary training as it prepares for further professional courses such as Physiology, Pathology, Surgery, Theriogenology, etc...
By the end of this module, students should be able to clearly describe different stages of the embryonic development, describe different bones, muscles and organs, and provide their clinical importance.

Course Description
This course introduces veterinary students to the essential principles of cell biology and molecular biology and their application to animal health and disease. Cell biology covers the structure and functions of animal cells, cellular organelles, cell division, cellular communication, membrane transport, and basic cellular processes.
The molecular biology component focuses on DNA, RNA, genes, chromosomes, DNA replication, transcription, translation, gene regulation, mutations, and genetic variation. Students are introduced to basic molecular techniques such as DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, gel electrophoresis, DNA sequencing, and molecular diagnostic methods.
Aim of the Course: Cell and Molecular Biology
- Understand the structure and functions of animal cells, organelles, membranes, and major cellular components.
- Explain fundamental cellular processes, including cell division, cellular communication, membrane transport, metabolism, and cell differentiation.
- Understand the molecular basis of heredity, including the structure and functions of DNA, RNA, genes, and chromosomes.
- Explain DNA replication, transcription, translation, gene regulation, mutations, and gene expression.
- Develop basic laboratory skills in microscopy, cell observation, DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, gel electrophoresis, and other molecular techniques.
Learning out come
Having successfully completed this module, you will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:
1. Different components of the cell (Cell membrane, Cytoplasm, Nucleus);
2. The cell division in prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms;
3. The aerobic and anaerobic cellular respiration;
4. The principles of structure and function of fundamental biomolecules of a cell such as nucleic acids, proteins, carbohydrates and lipids
