GSP6411: Post Genocide Issues and Reconstruction Processes
Semester 3

Brief description of aims and content

This Module will introduce students to varied complex issues that arise and often persist during a post-genocide period focusing on political systems, civil society, democracy and state building in post-genocide societies.

The module will address varied and many challenges confronted by different actors in post-genocide Rwanda: social, psychological, cultural and economic difficulties faced by survivors and families of those incarcerated for the perpetration of genocide.

Issues to be discussed will include: the development of democratic institutions such as a fair and just judicial system, open voting programs, a free and unfettered press, free access to education, cultural solidarity and citizenship, and values that contribute to the prevention of genocide and mass violence.

A special focus will highlight prevalence of post-genocide trauma and the unique challenges faced by women and children in post-genocide Rwanda.

An integral aspect of this course shall also focus on the issue of genocide negation and denial.
